We have all heard of historical legends like Harriet Tubman, whose valiant efforts to free over 300 Black slaves charged the hearts of Americans. However, many are unaware of another ally for freedom not far away in South America, who helped over 30,000 escaped slaves settle in the emancipated territory of Palmares; a free colony for runaway slaves in Brazil.

His name is Zumbi (1655-1695), a Capoeira warrior and descendent of African royalty who dedicated his life for the fight for freedom.
